The Challenge
Urban Outfitters, with over 60 stores in the USA, continue their successful expansion into the UK market. Following the successful collaboration between both parties during the completion of the Kensington and Covent Garden stores, Urban Outfitters UK Ltd commissioned L&H Solutions to manage and co-ordinate the early design phase of the Oxford Street store - their third in Central London. The store was designed in the USA by Philadelphia based ODG working alongside Nick McMahon Ltd and L&H Architecture in the UK to reflect the typical Urban Outfitters environment, with the trademark innovative use of common building materials. The tenancy comprised of Basement to second floor with the upper floor housing the new European regional offices.
The Solution
While retaining the raw feel of the other Urban Outfitters outlets, the design brief required a more refined appearance to that featured in their other UK stores, therefore promoting originality and imagination in Urban’s ever-evolving retail environment. Main features include the imposing galvanised steel-framed staircase with timber treads and landings and the roof light above the staircase. The exposed building services throughout all sales areas are a feature of the Urban Outfitters design and co-ordinate well with the exposed building structure. The resultant retail environment, completed within a challenging timeframe, is a fresh change to that of other retail stores in this very prominent retail location and a further step in the ever-evolving Urban Outfitters development.
